En el origen de Flos se encuentra el concepto de luminosidad: la idea de crear objetos a partir de una bombilla que puedan cambiar la forma de vivir, no solo de los italianos. De este modo, a principios de los años sesenta, a un tal Sr. Gavina, del pequeño fabricante de Merano Eisenkeil, se le metió en la cabeza, después de haber creado muchos muebles nuevos (con Achille y Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Afra y Tobia Scarpa y otros maestros del diseño), que también había llegado el momento de crear nuevas lámparas. Así, los Castiglioni y los Scarpa, mediante la técnica cocoon, que se inventó en Estados Unidos y de la que Eisenkeil fue pionero, empezaron a fabricar lámparas como la Taraxacum o la Fantasma. A estas primeras lámparas siguieron muchas más, bellas y sorprendentes: así, ya en su prehistoria, Flos (Flor, en latín, nombre que le dio Pier Giacomo Castiglioni) se encontró reinventando la idea de la iluminación artificial.
